Green Party councillors and campaigners were at last night’s meeting of Camden Council’s Sustainability Task Force, where the threat of Peak Oil was discussed and councillors resolved to ask the council to prepare a plan to show how Camden will cope with the increasing scarcity of oil and natural gas.
Shaun Chamberlin, author of Transition Timeline, said that oil production probably peaked in 2008, worldwide natural gas production will probably peak in the 2020s.
A plan, such as that produced by Bristol, would help residents, businesses and other organisations to adjust to a future without these fossil fuels. Measures to reduce energy use, move away from gas heating and maintain our vibrant urban community without relying on cheap fuel will take time to put in place. We need to take action now to deal with rising heating costs and to consider local food and energy production.
